Question:

Provisional License Holders New Law?

Hi,

I am wondering what peoples views are of the new law introduced in the Republic of Ireland that from 30th June 2008 no provisional license holder may drive a car unless unnacompanied by a fully qualified license holder whom has held their license for at least 2 years. (???). If any provisional license holder is caught driving unnacompanied, they face an automatic €1,000 fine and points on their license.

However, the RSA has said that they expect and believe that the garda will use "common sense" when after catching a provisional License Driver driving unnacompanied.

Is there anyone who has obeyed this new law and parked up their car?, or is there anyone who has taken down their L plates and just took the chance and drove on a provisional?

Or have you (or do you know of anyone) who has been caught driving on a provisional and if so, what was the repercussions dished out by the garda who caught them?

Thanks, in advance, for you comments,

David.

  1. Why take the chance ???

    Why push it ???

Just wait and follow the rules, you have zero experience and you are still not mature enough.

This is done for just not your safety but for every-ones safety.

    Just obey the laws....

  2. I take it you meant accompanied, not 'unnacompanied'?  If so, it seems a sensible way to stop inexperienced drivers tooling around without any guidance at all.  We've had a very similar law in the UK for many years, except that the full licence holder has to have held their licence for at least three years.

  3. In the UK it's held a full licence for a minimum of 3 years and be 21 years of age or over.

  4. I think that it is okay to have such penalty as there is advanced warning, otherwise I would not agree with it.

Yes, I must admit, the plates give the game away a bit.

A driving instructor who I know from my area ( a friend) has actually caught their clients before of whom they teach on a regular basis, driving on the roads unaccomplained.

In the United Kingdom, West Midlands and surrounding areas, we actually have a law (if you are not already aware) that any newly qualified drivers who receive 6 points, will automaticly lose their full licences and be re-issued with a provissional, this means taking both tests again. Back to square one basically. This would happen within the first 12 months, otherwise, doesn't count.

I think it is slightly over the top having fines for people who do not wear seat belts. If I'm sat in the back of a bently being driven to the local pub, I'm not going to have the belt on.

  5. Im in England, so i dont know if it is the same, but my mate took his learners off, and was dobbed in by a neighbour as he was driving round...and basically, he got 3 points put on his licence!
