Question:

Ps3 audio settings to get dolby digital?

Im using HDMI and that supports both picture and audio. I am trying to get my optical to work on my receiver but since the HDMI has both including audio, it won't let my optical work and my 5.1 ch is running on ProLogic. Is there a way to switch the audio out to dolby digital from HDMI to seperate the audio from video? I tried the audio settings on the ps3 to optical but doesn't work. Is this confusing? thanks

  1. Yeah there has to be something wrong with either the optical cable or your receiver. THere should be no reason why your ps3 could not output the audio and let the HDMI cable handle the video. Try swapping the optical cable out for another one and see if that works. If that still doesn't work, make sure your Receiver is receiving information through optical, by let's say changing the sound settings on your ps3. If you change the sound from 5.1 to stereo, it should register with your receiver. If it doesn't, then you know it's the receiver. Good luck! Hope this helps!

  2. try hooking it up to ur computer

  3. If your receiver is compatible with HDMI switching , you just set Linear on BD / DVD audio setting out on PS3 menu .Your receiver will decode any surround sound formats as Dolby Digital or DTS , even some new HD sound formats on Blu-ray movies . You don't have to use  an optical cable because you get both audio and video via HDMI from PS3 to receiver.

  4. The PS3 cannot output audio on both the HDMI and optical audio cable at the same time.

If you're using optical audio, be sure to go into the PS3's menu, and under the Sound settings, turn OFF HDMI audio.

I came across this by chance, and I'm sure it's driven a lot of PS3 users batty.

Why the PS3 has this limitation is beyond me.  Every other device I have that can do HDMI has no problems doing audio on every single audio output available - HDMI, optical, RCA...
