lets say my HDTV has an optical output and a HDMI input.

i connect my ps3 to the tv with HDMI and then took the optical cable and outputting it from the tv to my surround sound receiver(so i would be using the optical to get sounds from cable tv), can i do the custom for the sound setting and check dolby digital, would it decode and output through the tv? i cant explain it clearly but if you do get what i'm saying then thats good, lol. so would it decode when i play games and blu-ray movies or ps3 has to be directly connected to receiver? thanks

  1. In theory yes that would work, BUT the optical out on your tv wont pass the signal from the hdmi port.  Its only used for the cable tuner.  Your better off just hooking up the audio straight to your receiver.  Plus if you do try to pass the audio through the tv and it works theres a very good chance you will get a delay in your sound.
