Ps3 surround sound with digital coaxial cable through tv?

Im trying to get my ps3 to play through my 5.1 surround sound system but the AV reciever on the system does not support hdmi in nor digital optical audio in/out.

however, it does support digital coaxial audio in and my tv has the coax out plug.

would i be able to do surround sound by running the cables as so?:

PS3 --> hdmi --> tv (coax out) --> AV reciever(coax in)

  1. Probably not. I'm not sure which tv you have but the digital out (coaxial) on your tv more than likely only works to pass data from the tv's internal tuner and not from any outside sources you have connected (PS3).

    You could get a toslink optical to coaxial converter and connect the PS3 directly to the receiver (that seems kinda ghetto though, I'd just get a different receiver).
