well its subject verb agreement. when the subject is plural the verb is plural. so like team, commite, cabbient..etc.. are singular they're plurarl when they are only refered amongst themselves. so like would

"julie and the rest of the jury are in disagrement" or "julie and the rest of the jury is in disagrement". would it be the second one cause like julie is the subject and if you have another subject attached with and the verb should agree with julie....or the verb should agree with the one nearest to it...or should it be plural cause they are combined?.

  1. Almost every time the word "and" is used to combine two elements of a subject together, the subject becomes plural (which makes sense because a dog AND a cat are now two things, which makes it plural, right?).  So, "Julie and the rest of the jury are in disagreement" is correct.  "Julie and the rest of the jury" is the entire subject (it's a compound subject), not just Julie.  It should be plural because they are combined.

However, if there's ever a case like "'The Tortise and the Hare' is a good story," the singular form of the verb should be used because "The Tortise and the Hare" is a single collective phrase.  See the difference?

And if the word "or" is used instead of the word "and," you need to go with whatever the verb is closest to.  The verb should agree with the nearest one.  So, "Sara or her cousins are going to be there" and "Sara's cousins or Mark is going to be there" are correct.
