Can someone tell me how it is like in a psychiatric ward? I might be getting sent to one because I'm considered suicidal. I'm only 16 and I'm going into my Junior year of high school. I'm really scared. How will I get an education? Can someone explain to me.

  1. They're sending you there because they want to protect you and help you fix the problems in your life that have been making you this way, not because they want to ruin your life. The first thing you should do when you get there is talk to a therapist or counselor or someone, usually someone they already set up appointments with -- they should be someone you should try to trust and be honest with. They should be the first person you ask any questions about, or share any fears with, especially since they are there to help you. :)

Otherwise... Well, it depends. I was in one for anxiety issues, aggravated assault, and suicidal tendencies. They gave me a few anger management classes and therapy sessions with a counselor. I also went to a physician once every week or so, and we'd talk about some meds I could try out. It was a very temporary thing, so I could get my life back on track. Hopefully that's how it'll be with you too. You have to be willing to get help, though: they can't help you if you don't want to help yourself. They gave me a management class for my schedule and day-to-day upkeep. I was also required to go to the gym twice a week for stress relief, hahaha.

As for classes... Don't worry about it. Again, talk to a therapist or someone, because they should be there to help you... And I don't know your situation. But I was institutionalized in the middle of the school year. They almost always notify your school of everything that's going on, and my school sends two teachers to help you keep up... That's what they did with some kid that had cancer and couldn't go to school, anyway, and that's what they did with me. x) My english teacher came in twice a week to teach me english and history, and my math teacher came in to teach me my math and physics. It's a little hard staying on top of everything and not falling behind, but usually everyone wants to be really helpful.

Don't be scared to ask for what you want -- if you want a little more time to study and less time going to management courses, for example, that's one thing you can ask your therapist about and they'll see what you can do. Ask questions and ask for explanations. :) Good luck.
