Question:

Psychology or Sociology or other AS?

Hey, I'm about to go to 6th form in the UK and am still unsure on my options. Confirmed, I am going to do: Musical Theatre: Award, Theatre Studies, Accelerated Maths/Further Maths, Philosophy. Those count as 4 options that I am going to do at both AS and A2. Now I can do one more subject at AS level, and I think would benefit from it. Now the advantage I see to Psychology or Sociology is that it would be helpful if I decided to be a teacher one day (Though it is not as much as actually being an actor or having some mathsy job, it's still something that I wouldn't mind doing). I also see it as something to feed my brain.

I am very much into Philosophy, and after teen angst grappling with agnosticism, I've emerged a happy atheist curious about philosophy. This outlook into "why" is a curiosity that I feel would be satiated even more with an extra subject. Now, which out of Psychology and Sociology would be more worthwhile if I'm just doing it for the one year instead of two? And would either of them have a slight extra creative aspect?

And am I right in thinking that Maths and Further Maths are plenty for AS, and that it's only worth adding another aspect too it at a higher level?

Thanks for any insight Yahoo!

  1. do sociology i did it (Waitin for rresult on thurs) i did no work last year tho n got an a :)

  2. i think you;re choices are fine, i wouldnt add another. Trust me 4 can be enough and 5 is a handful. You will have no free time, and constantly working its not nice at 16.

Then when you go onto a levels, people usually drop one so they do 3. You can do four, and the subjects you're taking are fine, however perhaps pick subjects you enjoy and are widespread for careers, rather than worrying about what looks good on your ucas.

  3. wow u sound like a very smart teen.

well im in the uk and im going in to AS aswell! i think you should do psycology and sociology they are really good i took them for gcse, and its something new and differant i am also takeing it for my AS plus philosophy, due to the fact of its very intersting and drama lool! dont do further maths unless your really interested its very boring i hear and alot of people drop out. keep what you got sounds good. you sound very smart!

  4. I took both psychology and sociology at AS level only 2 years ago. For teaching I would definitely recommend psychology. sociology is basically how society acts as a whole whereas psychology is why people do things, which i found much more interesting. My advice would be to take psychology and then buy or borrow some sociology books to swot up on your own at home, or maybe make a friend who does sociology and sneak into some of the lessons. Try and learn about both but take psychology :)
