i use to be a self injurer and i want to help troubled kids that also suffer from this problem. and people with personality disorders and suffer from depression and stuff like that. but mostly just kids and teens.

i want to talk to them and help them, not JUST give them meds or whatever.

would that be in psychology or phychiarty?

  1. Psychology is what you are looking for.  Community counseling or social work (6 yr programs) are the closest things to actually doing what you are looking for though...

  2. psychology - talking therapies individual and group;

    psychiatry - able to write prescriptions along with psychology aspect

  3. or possibly social work

    LCSW

  4. There has been a recent change and now some Psychologists can prescribe meds in addition to providing therapy. It would be worth your while to explore the option of becoming a licensed Psychologist and taking the additional coursework and state licensure exams for prescription privileges.

    Psychiatrist already prescribe meds in addition to rendering diagnosis but are not well known for providing therapy though no doubt there is an exception to every rule.

    Best of luck to you.
