Public Buses stop at places not listed in schedule book?

How do you know when the bus stops at those stops, since I rode the bus (not school bus) today for the first time in a very long time, and I noticed that some of the stops that the bus stops at aren't listed in my book of stops and their time. So how does it work then?

  1. New York City buses, CT Transit, Transport of Rockland, Long Island Bus, Suffolk County and Bee-Line buses has too many stops, so it cannot list all schedule except for guide-a-ride. On online website, it's called timespoint.

Metropolitan Transit Authority (New York)'s Bx12 +Select Bus Service timestable

Bus timestable only shows major transfer point like this for example.

If you're between two timestable point, you have to be there before first point schedule time.

  2. the bus schedule only lists certain stops called time points

the bus will stop at other stops along that route if somones

wants on or off at that stop

  3. you got on the wrong bus or your schedules out of date. or your driver was new

  4. In many bus schedules the stops listed are what are called "Time points" which are usually major stops/intersections.  The buses are expected to be at those time points within a minute or 2 of the time shown on the schedule  - of course they are really expected to be there at the posted time but passenger loads and street traffic can modify that (there may be supervisors there waiting to see if the bus is on time).

If you consider how many bus stops there may be on a particular route, if there were all to be shown with the arrival time then the schedule would be 2 or 3 times the size that it is now.

In looking at a schedule, it is reasonable to assume that a bus will arrive at an unlisted stop at a time between those listed for the 2 time points it is located between (depending on how far apart the stops are).

  5. Here in Orange County, only the main stops are listed in the schedule.  They are the time-check points, meaning the bus stops there at the time listed.  At the other stops, it depends on traffic conditions.  Sometimes the times are posted at the stop, and sometimes they vary.
