Public Internet Protection?

I use an unsecured network for my online needs, but feel an inhibition towards this seemingly "risky" act. I need to know what protection is out there for encryption of my files so that no one can steal my identity in any way; preferably download-able.

Use a good firewall to secure data. If you are using Windows XP, enable the firewall through the Security Center. Or use: Comodo Firewall http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

For encryption: you can use either a third-party like TrueCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/
