Question:

Public School Orientation?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

Tomorrow I'll be going to 8th grade orientation at a public school.

I have been going to private school my entire life (since pre-school) and now I found out 5 minutes ago there is a 50% chance I'm going to public school!!!!

Tomorrow I have to get tested and stuff like that.

What do I wear? I'm really preppy (both real prep and a&f prep) and I love designers (not for the names though, but because of how they look)

Advice please? ANYTHING!!! I'm so upset right now, I love my private school!!!!!!!! Comforting words? I don't care... just I don't know what to think

There will be a pizza party afterwards...

  1. I went to a private school for 8 years and so did my sister and then we went to a public high school and we  were fine. the transition was fine its diff bc it was way bigger but youget used to it.

  2. 1. Public School is not so bad! I've known tons of people who prefer public school because private schools tend to be a bit more clique-ish.

I've gone all my years, and its wonderful :)

    2. Go to that pizza party. It will give you an opprotunity to meet more people in the school, and thats always good.

Wear what you would normally wear, people really don't care that much about your personal style.

  3. Aww I had to switch from private school to public school two years ago. It sucked and I still miss my old school, which was so wonderful.

But the good part is I adjusted to my new school. My private school was small and cozy and tight-knit and incredibly accepting and full of creative people. But public school has an awesome diversity of people, interested in every possible thing. There's a huge amount of wiggle room, and something comforting about not knowing everyone there. There is always so much to explore, so many clubs and so many classes to take.

Now I'm really enjoying public school. Switching from private to public is a huge shock, but just relax and you'll do fine. It'll freak you out at first. What you do is be friendly and polite, and choose someone who seems kind and open. Tell them that you're new at this school and don't know anyone, and ask if you can join them at lunch. If this person is in your class right before lunch, it'll be especially easy. The next day choose someone else in a different class, and so on. After a few weeks, you should know several different groups at the school, and know which one you want to hang with. You'll be really out of your comfort zone, and it'll be freaky, but hang in there. Make friends in the first few days of school, because that's when the cliques are still open. Later they become more set in stone and it's harder.

What you should do is wear something casual that makes you feel beautiful and confident at orientation. Nothing too fancy or dressy, keep it simple. Make sure it's an outfit you love. You'll feel the most confident wearing something you love. Observe what the other kids are wearing so you know how kids dress. At first, you will probably want to dress to blend in. But as you make friends and become confident, you'll feel more comfortable dressing unique, like the person you are.

And I'm truly sorry you have to leave the private school you loved. But if you put it in perspective, most kids don't get to see how great a private school is. They just see it as preppy and stuck up, and think all private school kids are that way, even if they're on scholarship (like me). So at least you got to experience the private school way, even if you had to leave. Don't worry about public school, it'll be great.

  4. Wear what you'd like!  Don't stress at all. I'll guarantee you'll like public school better. The rules should be relatively the same, and since you're new, they'll fill you in. You get to meet alot of different kids in public school, and it's in general just a happier/different place that doesn't just focus on discipline.

Don't worry. I know it's hard because you've been sheltered into a private school all your life and you probably were required to do things you didn't want/have to do, but public school isn't like that. You get to explore a whole different world you haven't experienced yet. Make the most of it. Just keep in touch with your old friends.

    Good luck!

  5. It's always tough changing schools - but your parents wouldn't switch you to a school that they didn't think would be good for you. You're not moving towns or cities, so you'll still have all your friends from private school plus all the new ones from public school. Everyone will know you and you'll have tons of friends.

You should wear whatever you're comfortable in. Don't over-dress because you'll stand out - it's school and a pizza party so be casual and comfortable. Jeans and a nice shirt sounds good.
