OK, so I am a Christian, and I have allways been in Private/Christian schools...(atleast they claimed to be, two were in between, one was 'full' christian) and as you have peobably figured out, I have been to three schools before, (Mainly because I moved twice) anyway, I was Homeschooled this year and am going to Public school for the first time next year!! I am half exited and half scarred! I see those shows like Degrassi, and Life with Derek, (which are still very different shows, but they still are in public school) and in Degrassi, BAD things happen, I know it's a drama show but still... do those things really happen? (FYI- 4 those of you who haven't seen Degrassi: People take drugs... and endup in the Hospital, One guy is shot, and the killer ends up being killed, Peole have bollimia, and smoke underage-that one I know is true, and people get preggo, and there is even a stabbing... where the SWEETEST GUY EVER get's stabbed and there is LOTS of drama from that! and the

  1. Well, aside from the stabbing, those things all happened at my small town public middle and high school 20 years ago...so yep, I think it's pretty likely that those things happen now.

They aren't all found at all public schools, but they are common.

However, there are also people in schools who have working "moral compasses"; don't pay attention to the popularity game.  Hang out with the people that think and act like you do, whether they're widely accepted or not.  Stay true to what you know to be right, even when others don't back you up.  There are things about public school that you will find...well, shocking, but there will also be people there that you can become good friends with, that will stand by you.

Just remember that your choices are *your* choices, no matter where you are.  It's more difficult to stand firm in public school, but it *is* possible.  Be the one that stands up for what is right and make your own choices, regardless of what other people do.  The kids who end up getting pregnant or contracting an STD, the kids who smoke, drink, and do drugs, do so because they made choices that led to those actions.  Make choices that will lead to the outcome that *you* want.  :)

  2. Yes, those kinds of things can and do happen. Not at every public school, and not all those things in one particular school necessarily, but yes, they can and do happen. Where I live, we don't have as violent of schools as depicted in Degrassi, but the drugs, pregnancies, smoking, etc., yep, yep, yep. Of course, it's not all the kids who do it, but it's very, very common. Particularly partying on the weekends, after having lied to parents about going out with a best friend or some such.

  3. I have been to several public and private schools and homeschooled for my senior year. I love Degrassi, but it is hardly realistic. Kids do go through hard stuff during high school. Yes, some kids get pregnant, some get eating disorders, and some take drugs. The only thing you need to remember is that if you don't choose these paths, you will be just fine. You will make  friends who have the same moral guidelines and just because you are in public school does not mean you will end up pregnant, STD ridden, or shot.

  4. It depends on the public school as to the amount of violence. When I was in high school (11 years ago) they where using drugs, a couple of girls ended up pregnant, underage drinking was the norm. I didn't go to a violent school but we had our share of bad stuff happening.

We also had a lot of good.  You don't have to hang out with the druggie crowds. There are more kids who are interested in keeping their lives straight and getting out of school so that they can move on with their lives.

Remember life is not like TV. You should know that by now. TV makes everything seem wonderful or horrible there is no reality (even in reality TV). They twist the facts (if it really happened) or just make it up.

One more thought: the schools here have a police officer at the school all day and the schools in New Orleans all have metal detectors. That has become common place in the big cities all over the nation. Sad but true!

  5. that kind of stuff happens all over the world everyday maybe you need public school .it sounds like you've never experienced anything, do you even watch the news? Honey not everything you see on TV is real some of those things are just facts of life but that doesn't mean there going to happen at your school. don't worry i will be OK and degrassi is not real. stay away from bad kids and you do fine.
