Next week I have to give an oral presentation infront of my entire english class. Normally I would have no problem speaking but I have to tell a shortened version of the Amityville horror story as if I was a storyteller. But im not allowed to read off of script or notecard. Now usually i am fine with public speaking, but I practiced infront of a few friends and I stuttered and couldnt organize my thoughts and made it seem like a mess. How can I help this problem? I know im going to practice alot this weekend since we have to give it on Wed. but some advice?(oh and the picture the audience in their underwear doesnt work for me so dont suggest it) Thanks!!

  1. Stuttering is a combination of not being sure what you are going to say and not being entirely familiar with the subject.

Be sure you know the material before you spend a lot of time practicing with your friends.

Friends are a distraction when you need to focus.Sometimes it is better to practice in private in front of the mirror part of the time and away from the mirror a part of the time to simulate the parts of your presentation when you are and when you are not looking at your audience.

  2. You've answered the old vaudeville question....

"How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"

The answer is "Practice, Practice, Practice."

Good luck, practice in front of the mirror with a stop watch if you can.

    Peace.

  3. maybe u could see ur audience as children, or maybe a little older, maybe ur age, if that would make u feel better. i think ur best bet is to just practice, know ur story forward and backwards. good luck!

  4. pretend the audience isnt even there  like pretend your doing it in frount of your dog (if you have one)or other pets and then keep practicing when you feel better try going infront of your frined it helps me alot!!!

  5. Organize your speech on notecards with BRIEF one word ques.......Make it an OUTLINE format....  Let's say you have five cards total..... practice learning each section of the speech from each card.... one card at a time.....Once you memorize what goes with card one, add card two. Practice one and two. Add three, Practice 1,2,3...... it will become very easy the more you add. you are stuttering because you are not comfortable with what you want to say. Once you memorize card 1, move on...... before you know it, you will be comfortable saying the entire speech without cards. We are always better at talking about things we like and things we are familiar with. Good luck.
