  1. Most pumps at service stations are limited to 60 psi or so. While this may be enough pressure for a mountain bike tire, it would leave you riding on the rims with a road bike tire.

Over-inflating a tire with a service station pump hasn't been a real concern since the days when most bikes had rolled-edge beads and 65psi was considered high pressure. Modern bikes have hook-bead rims and can take pressures of 100-170 psi, depending on the tire. A service station pump may put 60psi into the tire really fast, but once the pressure in the tire equalizes with the pressure in the tank, that's it -- no more air will flow. Inflating quickly may make it harder to check for a pinched tube, though.

  3. I carry a bicycle pump on my bike.

I also use a 12 volt pump that plugs into the car.

They are cheap and work very good for a bike.

We have pumps at stores and gas stations,

    They are coin operated (.75)

They are no better than the 12 v.

  4. The only place I know of where they have public pumps is at a gas station but you shouldn't use it for your bike.  They put out too much volume too quickly and it will blow out your tire.
