Question:

Public laundry facilities and rude public?

I just moved to a new apartment complex and the management has provided a single washer and dryer to be shared among the tenants on each floor. This afternoon I started my laundry and then when I was ready to use the dryer, I discovered that someone has not removed their clothes from it (it wasn't on when I put my clothes in the washer and so I have no idea how long they have been sitting there). My instinct is to just pile them on top of the dryer, but I tend to have a pretty conservative attitude (ie. if you're not responsible for your laundry then you reap the consequences of others taking care of it for you...) but I really don't want to irritate anyone, I just want to do my laundry. If I have to wait around all day for whoever to collect their clothes, then I will still be doing my laundry at midnight, lots of wasted time for me and rude dryer noise for the other tenants who wish to sleep at that hour. What should I do??

  1. I can totally understand how you feel. I would feel the clothes and make sure they are not damp.  As long as they are not damp I would pile them on top of the drier so you can dry your clothes.  If they are damp i would turn the dryer on for a bit first.  I know you don't want to irritate anyone but they are being inconsiderate to start off with.

  2. I would first give it a few minutes and see if they come back.   If they have not came back, I would take it out and place it above the dryer or someplace clean in the laundry room.    If you know who's laundry it is in the dryer before you, you might contact them and ask them to pick up their laundry.

  3. You take the pile of clothes out and put them on top of the dryer or on a folding table and continue on with your clothes.  IF they are still there when you are done with your laundry, if you want to be "kind", put the clothes back in the dryer.

  4. just remove the laundry and place it on top of the dryer or in a bag there is nothing wrong with that, its proper protocol.

  5. just take the clothe out of the dryer so your clothes can be dried without sitting in the wash forever and becoming mildewed. anyway what if someone wants to use the washer and your clothes are still in?

  6. If you piled them aside nicely then good. Also when your done and the clothes are still sitting you can put them back in the dryer. Maybe you can talk to your tenant, and he can work out a plan to pass it on in writing to your neighbors. Good Luck
