  1. Well, that's going to depend on the homeschooler--isn't it?

I've seen homeschooled kids who spend a solid seven-hour day at their studies.  I seem to recall the one TV show that featured a family with--what was it, 20 kids?--all homeschooled, and each one in addition to required academics could play piano and violin; all the boys knew woodworking and automotive maintenance; all the girls knew sewing and cooking.  (OK, the family was stuck in s*x-role stereotyping--but they all were learning more than typical public-school kids).

And on the other extreme, I've seen little ragamuffins running unsupervised through the streets, and when asked why they're not in school, they respond "I'm home schooled!"  So I think the five things those kids do during the day are: they relate to their little street urchin friends, get into scrapes, play games, disrupt the neighborhood, and dodge the attendance officers.

My instinct is that most homeschoolers fall closer to the first examples than the second.

  2. I've thought this about them:

    -Very smart

-Aren't wasting any time in the school system.

-Laugh at public schoolers who stay in school 8 hours a day.

    -Hard working

    -Sometimes on the un-motivated/lazy side.

    -Travel a lot

That's what I have in mind. I've seen good and bad home schoolers. It is the same with public schoolers. There are the ones who go to public school who are completely lazy and have terrible grades, and you can find that in home school as well. So I really don't understand all the negativity about home schoolers...

  3. All of my sisters (3) were home schooled. I was not, as I am several years older, and was out of the house by the time my parents made the decision to home school them. At the time I was not supportive of that decision, because of my experience in public school...I had a great time, in school, and I thought that my parents were taking that experience away from them...I was wrong.

Fast forward 15 years. 2 of them graduated from Pepperdine on scholarships, and 1 of them is attending Columbia as a post grad right now. My mother has made a successful business out of home schooling....She is the founder and owner of Total Language Plus

  4. i think that homeschoolers.

    sleep in

    are stupid

    eat alot

    travel alot

    && are rich

    uhh jason!!

  5. You guys are dumb we don't live in our basements, and we have friends, i do lots of work more than when i was in public school, lastly im doing very well in all my subjects!

  6. I always had the impression homeschoolers...

    1. Played video games/go on the computer all day

    2. Eat food all day

    3. Stay inside all day

    4. Get no exercise

    5. Do little schoolwork a day

That might not be true, but I've seen homeschoolers who acted really lazy to be honest... but on the other hand, I've seen perfectly normal ones too. But i'm sure a lot of public schoolers think the same way as I do.

  7. What we know from what we see and hear it is varies widely.

Some do what they want, which incudes next to no school work.

Some do calculus by age 14

Some ice skate or ride horses a lot in the daytime and do school work nights.

Some have a parttime day job and do school work before and after.

Since I was homeschooled, unschooled, Religious schools, private schooled and public schooled in two different systems I know how my end worked.

My mother had some unique ways of teaching me.  We do it as games at bedtime and I learned touch typing that way.  The "think" system where I visualized the keyboard in my mind and with my hands.  When I was experimenting with music she'd show me notation and how it works.  She'd bring home IBM cards from work for me to play with and teach me how to read the hole punches.

When I was learning in unschooling how to play guitar and do songs I liked she'd listen to the records and pull out her acordion and tell me the chords and even show me how it was a Minor 7th or Minor 6th and I'd hear the difference between that and the minor.

She taught me the rules of intervals.

  8. I am a home schooler and I am not mad because the people who are answering the questions just don't know but home schoolers are all different. Some may be like you say but I have never seen any and I am  homeschooled and know many home schooled kids.

Anyways I would just like to say some things

    To answer points  :D

    1. I am not allowed to go to school in my PJ's,

    2. We eat lunch all together as  a family so we cannot eat whenever we want.

    3. Maybe it easier for some kids, it depends if the parents challenge there kids or not, but it is different for every kid.

    4.  We use curriculums for some things so we have tests, and we also have a end of year tests, I do not know if all home schoolers have tests but we do. Also all are school is  homework so we don't need any extra! But if you mean doing assignments and projects with out the teacher around we do a LOT of that.

ilovebma I wanted to say about your points

    1. Well some home schoolers do sleep in but that is because they can have a flexible schedule so they can do there school later in the day.

    2.  You cannot just say home schoolers are stupid, some probably do more work then any public schooler, and it is terrible to just say they are stupid when there is NO evidence of that. Some families may not be able to do home schooling well but all the home schoolers I know are smart people and I cannot believe some one would be mean enough to say what you just said.

    3. Where did you get the idea they eat a lot? Though they may be able to have better meals ( like not a pack lunch or mcdonalds every day) I have never heard they eat more then usual.

    4.  Yes home schoolers  can travel because they have more flexible and can do school on the road, but they do not all do that. And we usually take are trips in the summer so we don't have to worry about school.

    5. Where did you get the idea that homeschoolers are rich? it seems as if you have a terrible prejudice to home schoolers but no evidence to back it up.

Whoah it's josh here is what I have to say about what you have to say.

    1. Well I am home schooled and I have never played a video game in my life, but I do use the internet as an educational resource during school I have a one hour computer limit when it is just for fun after school.

    2. Umm where you got the idea we ate food all day I do not know

    3. We play a lot of soccer here at my house, go to the parks once a week and play outside and on our bikes every day also some of us have a time to work out every day. I cannot talk for all home schoolers but I think most of them get there exercise.

    4.  We do school from 9:00 to 3:00 and though that may be a little less then you guys we don't have to spend tons of time in line waiting for others and so on so we can pack a lot more school into a shorter time.

    Ao

    1. I don't understand what you mean by laugh at public schoolers who are in school 8 hours a day.

    2. I think it depends on if the kid, if he wants to learn I think he can learn a lot more then if he does not, weather or not he goes to public school

    my_name_

My parents are not ridiculous they made a good decision in home schooling me, I have lots of friends, learn, and have fun. I am quite offended by what you say cause I love my parents a lot, and I also think that home schooling was good for me.

Ava S I appreciate that you are not as prejudice against homeschoolers as some of the others.

I enjoy being home schooled and can see why a public schooler may want to be but if your parents are hard enough it is not as easy as you think. I guess you could say we don't have home work but we do do projects and assignments aside from are teacher teaching us and you could even call all the work we do home work.

I have never listened music while working but I hear that listening to classical music makes you smarter.

I think everyone should look at the goods and bads of both ways of teaching, and those who say that home schoolers are stupid should find good facts to back them up before saying that. Also I think how home schooling works is different in every family cause everyone does it diferently  so it is hard to say  what they are like.

  9. i'm a public school, and for some reason when i think about homeschoolers i think:

    1. wearing pajamas during their lessons (haha)

    2. during their lessons at a kitchen table

    3. eating lunch whenever they want

    4. homeschooling seems easier

    5. no tests/homework

i'm sure most of those statements are untrue with homeschoolers, but thats what comes to mind.

  10. 1) Get yelled at by their ridiculous parents.

    2) Get tied up by their ridiculous parents.

    3) Get beaten by their ridiculous parents.

    4) Get told they cannot go out side and hang out with kids by their ridiculous parents.

    5) Get seriously psychologically scarred by their ridiculous parents.

Why would anyone home school their kid? You've got to be kidding me.

  11. 1.  You get to take breaks when the lesson starts getting you sleepy,

    2.  No homework- you're already at home!

    3.  Listen to music as you work.

I am sure that homeschoolers work very hard, but, going to public school, I tend to think homeschoolers have the better deal!  (Grass is always greener...)

  12. My children are in public school

I have a relative who homeschools

Here are some things that I know for a fact that my children get to experience that hers do not....

    1.  Peer interaction, building friendships (not saying that all homeschoolers miss out on that, but my relatives definitely do)

    2.  Time constraint, deadlines (psers can't pick and choose what they want to work on, when and for how long... that is a good tool for the future)

    3.  Extracurricular activities and school clubs

    4.  Having teachers to turn to when they don't understand something (and especially if it is something that I don't quite understand either)

Edit....  Sorry, I must have read the question incorrectly...

Here are things that my relatives children do in a day (note these do not apply to ALL homeschoolers)

    1.  Watch tv (alot)

    2.  Work at the family business (even when they don't want to)

    3.  Sleep in

    4.  Take care of ALL the animals on the farm while the   parents are inside

    5.  Clean the house

Then if there is time left in the day, they do actual school work

  13. Eat a good breakfast.

    lessons

go to extra curricular social activities.

    stay out of gangs

stay away from drugs, from smoking, from drinking, from government indoctrination activities.

The real question is what goes on in a government schoolers day...
