  1. I've been to Ireland 3 times (going for my 4th in December).  I have never rented a car.  I have only traveled by bus and loved it.  I never had a problem with them not being on time, and the National bus service (Bus Eireann) goes all over Ireland.  Two years ago I was in Cork and took the bus to Blarney.  It only took about 15-20 minutes to get to the castle from there and cost about 5 Euro roundtrip.  Trains are much more expensive than the buses, so I tend to avoid them.  Check out Bus Eireann's website for time tables and costs.

  2. I'd recommend you rent a car...I live in Dublin, so I'm not very familiar with the public transportation around Cork, but generally speaking, public transport in Ireland can be a bit iffy - not very punctual, quite expensive etc. Taxi drivers have also occasionally been known to rip tourists off. So go with a car - it gives you more flexibility, and you can go as and when you please.

  3. it depends where your travelling,

are you going across the country, or staying around 1 city,

if i were you i would definately rent a car, trains/buses are not that reliable time wise, and i dont think they are that cheap either

  4. I don't know much about Ireland or public transportation. I would rent a car.
