  1. Vallarta Nayarit is a resort beach with a number of 4+ and 5 star hotels.  Located about 30 minutes drive north of Puerta Vallarta.  It is a fairly new resort.  Puerta Vallarta is one of the oldest towns in Mexico but now hosts a number of up scale hotels. A short distance south of PV is Nuevo Vallarta which is another newer resort area.  Plenty to chose from but depends if you want new or old.  Old Mexico you may prefer PV.  New Mexico or resort style living you wuld probably enjoy VN or VP.  Another great place to stay inh Mexico is Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo which is on the same coastline.  There you can get both new and old.

  2. Puerto Vallarta was the original town, the downtown has typical mexican architecture, it is very romantic and nice. The tourism in the area begun about the 50's. Puerto Vallarta is located in Jalisco state, just in the limit to Nayarit state, in the Banderas Bay.

Nuevo Vallarta is a brand new touristic area, all the resorts are very new, and it is located in Nayarit state (nayaritan side of Banderas bay).

There are new tourism developments in both towns.

Downtowns are only 30 minutes driving, but Jalisco uses the Central time and Nayarit uses mountain time, (interesting fact), therefore they have different hours (one hour, 9 pm in PV is 8pm in NV).

Actually, it seem to be the same touristic city.

In my experience, Puerto Vallarta is more for youngs and couples, and Nuevo Vallarta for familys with children and/or retired people. PV has more "wild" nightlife. If you stay at Nuevo Vallarta and want party at night you will have to go to Puerto Vallarta.

  3. Puerto Vallarta is the most beautiful city in the pacific coastline of Mexico.  It is located between the jungle and the ocean.  Right now it is the second gourmet destination in México (after Mexico City), with hundreds of 5 star restaurants, spectacular discos, very atractive tours like the canopy, jungle tour, snorkel or diving tours, also you can get a little boat and visit the Yelapa beach and waterfalls or Quimixto or Las Animas.

Or you can just walk the Malecon (sea side walk) at night and have fun with hundreds of attractions along this famous area of the city.

Ahhh......Nuevo Vallarta is 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, all inclusive hotels,  no discos, no restaurants, no nightlife,  just relax on the beach and read an interesting book.  Maybe two books...
