What I like about it:

while there are Americans there most of the tourists are European-French, Italian, German, Swiss and many of the restaurants and bars are operated by Europeans.

Most of the beaches in Mexico are filthy, this one is fairly clean especially if you walk out of the bottom of the bay where Puerto is at the point. This is Zicatela Beach which has about the 3rd largest waves in the world (after Hawaii and Australia) so if you are a top notch surfer or just want to watch some world class surfing this is the place.

Nearby is the nude beach, Zipolite. In Puerto Escondido topless is tolerated.

There are also excursions to nearby salt marshes where you can see tropical flora and fauna.

It is a fun place. Not the best swimming beach i the world, but if you are looking for a fun and maybe romantic few days I recommend it.
