Question:

Puerto Rican Slimy Fruit ??

I was a Navy brat and my dad was stationed in Puerto Rico when I was 7-10 years old.

There was a fruit there that I absolutely loved. It was green and I want to say it was in a shell or pod and slimy (inside the casing) and that it also had a pit.

I seem to recall it was a major choking hazard for kids.

Does anyone know what it is?

  1. They're called gunips.  So delicious!  They sell them on the streets of Miami for a dollar.

  2. They are called Mamoncillo (aka gunips or honey berries).

Each mamoncillo fruit has a large seed inside a slimy protective coating.  The seed is the same ovoid shape as the fruit itself. Mamoncillo seeds can be roasted and eaten just like sunflower seeds or chestnuts

  3. It sounds like a mango.

    What are gunips??
