Puerto Rico Open: Troy Matteson takes the lead - round 3 updates
Troy Matteson hammered 6-under par 66 on Saturday to surge into clubhouse lead at the Puerto Rico Open. The $3.5 million event is taking place at the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The American chose the front nine as his attack and anchored a score of three-under after carving four birdies and one bogey in the nine holes. He walked towards the back with golf bag equipped with wedges and irons, which reflected his game plan. Clubs
with low loft such as wedges and irons are commonly used by long hitters. This is the reason that the player finished fifth in driving distance and first in Green Hits in Regulation.
Matteson birdied three more holes on the back and moved into lead, increasing his chances on the victory. He has a three-day aggregate of 16-under par.
He was chased by Hunter Haas, who finished three strokes shy of him. Haas opened the round with a sizzling pace, when he hit an iron on both of the opening holes to chip for a birdie. The American rolled two more birdies in the later holes and capped the
first nine with a score of four-under. Haas lost the pace on the back, when he surrendered at par after bogeying the 13th and birdying the 15th hole of the course.
Four strokes behind the leader stood Michael Bradley in the third spot of the leader board. The player birdied five holes in the front and bogeyed one on the back, before settling at four-under par 68.
Five-way tie was seen at the fourth spot, which included Chris Tidland, George McNeill, Angel Cabrera, Brandt Jobe and Brendon de Jonge. Jonge was the only player in the group to eagle the 18th hole, while Jobe and Cabrera produced a blemish-free
scorecard with four birdies each.
Meanwhile, Ryder Cup sensation, Stewart Cink, successfully completed two bogeys and one double-bogey against three birdies on Saturday. The American has been struggling with driving accuracy ever since the start of the tournament, but is improving with with
time.
