Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic to compete in 2011 Caribbean Series – MLB News
Isidoro Garcia Stadium will see the sixth game of the 2011 Caribbean Series between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Venezuela, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico are competing in the Caribbean Series this year. The format of the Series is based on that each team plays against each other twice. Currently each team is on a 1-1 win loss record after four games in
the first two days of play in the Series.
Last year Fernando Martinez of the Dominican Republic led the team with eight home-runs and an amazing average of .348 to help his team with the Series. Puerto Rico was runners up in last year.
The Dominican Republic has a very strong team this year with 17 Major League Baseball players. The team has won the Series 18 times since 1970.
Puerto Rico also has a decent team as their 7-3 victory over Mexico showed their tremendous talent and competitiveness.
"With [Puerto Rico's] league struggling to stay afloat, the Caribbean Series will be an important test in terms of how Puerto Rico presents the series to the fans all over Puerto Rico and to Latin America," MLB's vice president of international baseball
operations, Lou Melendez said. "It's a very important time. From a Major League Baseball and Caribbean Confederation standpoint, you want to see the league in Puerto Rico continue to improve and hold its own."
The Series has drawn a tremendous amount of attention over the past few years, as more MLB players are taking part in this exciting tournament. The competition provides a valuable platform for increasing the popularity of baseball in the Latin American countries.
Every year the Series has seen an increase in attendance and coverage, as baseball is becoming quite popular in this part of the world. Also, there are many MLB players that are from Latin America and they enjoy taking part in the Series to draw the fans to
the game.
This year the Series looks to be exciting and hard fought amongst the teams. It will be interesting to see which team will come out on top to take the title.
