Puerto Rico defeats Argentina by 3-1 in a 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix match – Volleyball news
With Pool A matches of the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix going on in Macau, China, the Puerto Ricans met Argentina on June 10, 2012.
The resulting competition took four sets to reach its close at the end of which the Puerto Ricans found themselves on the wining end.
Only the first set of the match was relatively competitive as the rest of the three were won by either team by comfortable margins. The scoreboard showed the following final set scores, 25-20, 25-16, 16-25 and 25-17.
The Puerto Rican coach, David Aleman, shared his views on the win by making the following statements, “As I said yesterday, every day we try to improve our games and today we played better than we did in our previous games. We did a lot of blocking and Argentina
was not able to contain us. We played at a higher level than Argentina and we look forward to the next round of matches.”
On the contrary, the Argentinean coach, Horacio Bastit, expressed himself on the match in the following words, “We are very dissatisfied with the results of the match today. We were expecting another outcome for the match, considering our performance against
China yesterday, we thought we had the tactics to win against Puerto Porto.”
A player from the Puerto Rican side was able to land the title of the best scorer of the match as Yarimar Rosa tallied 23 points and was helped by teammate Sarai Alvarez who put up 15 points of her own. On the other hand, the most active player on the Argentinean
front was Lucia Fresco with nine points.
Puerto Rico got the lead in the opening frame at the stat and was able to stick with it till the end of the frame at 25-20. The confidence generated at winning the opening set propelled the Puerto Ricans to speed on in the second frame and secure it easily
at 25-16. However, the Argentineans were able to reverse the pattern by grabbing the third frame at 25-16 but the Puerto Ricans did not back down in the fourth set and bagged it at 25-17.
The recent win has enabled the Puerto Ricans to score their first victory in the tournament whereas the Argentineans have suffered their third straight loss.
