Puerto Rico defeats Mexico by 3-1: Women’s Volleyball Tournament - Pan American Games
The Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball team had a match on Sunday, October 16 as part of the Women’s Volleyball Tournament of the Pan American Games that are currently taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Pool B match was contested against the Mexicans
for four thrilling sets at the end of which the Puerto Ricans were able to find themselves on the winning end of the match-up.
The first set of the game started off evenly but the host team was able to dominate it in the end and get the upper hand on the Puerto Ricans. However, Puerto Rico responded by coming out strong in the second set and equalising the match by bagging a win.
The third set saw the performance of the Puerto Ricans improve while the Mexicans slumped. Eventually, Puerto Rico was able to get its hands on the third as well as the fourth sets and win the match at the following final set scores: 22-25, 25-21, 25-18 and
25-13.
The coach of the winning team, David Aleman, expressed himself in the following way at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “We knew it was going to be very tough, especially on the first two sets. Mexico has improved
a lot. But in comparison with the first match, our service was more effective in the last one and that gave us the chance to keep our level, with a great work in reception and with our middle players.”
On the other hand, the Mexican coach Mario Herrera, expressed himself in the following manner: “We thought we could be on the next round. But at this time we only have to keep on working, to continue and I want to congratulate Puerto Rico. For our next match,
possibilities exist; we are on the same track, we know that we will face USA, not its first team but is our last chance.”
The Puerto Ricans were able to dominate the Mexicans in the blocking department as they put up a total of nine blocks while the Mexicans tallied four in all. The Puerto Ricans were better than the Mexicans in the serving as well because they scored four
aces while the Puerto Ricans scored three points on them in the whole match.
The player that was able to tally the most points for her team was the Puerto Rican Sarai Alvarez who scored a total of 20 points for her team in the entire match. On the other hand, the Mexican top scorer was Andrea Rangel who made her presence felt by
registering 13 points in all.
