  1. PR is an island in the Caribbean, a U.S. territory. You cannot compare it with any other country. It is unique. But if you need to find a similarity is sort of a state with an island feel to it.

  2. "Somewhat agreeing" with another poster about PR.  It's unique in its island flare but still much like the United States.   Yeah, I know it's a territory of the US but technically not a "part of it."  However, it feels just like home.  (From a "US country girl's" perspective.)

I lived there for a bit.  I'm a US citizen from southern Indiana--bordering Kentucky (My home area is considered geographically and politically as "The North" but we have all the warmth and of the hospitality and The South).  The culture and primary language are definitely different as are most of the foods, music/media and the climate; however, most of the people were "just like home."  We do most things on the same level:  homelife, educational system, religion/faith.

It didn't look like "home" or even sound like it and when I ate, it didn't taste like "home" either but it felt as much like home as southern Indiana because of the people and their genuine warmth.  When I returned from the Netherlands, I understood why people kiss the ground when they return to their home countries.  When I returned from  Puerto Rico, I'd had a wonderful experience in a totally different culture and seen many things I couldn't see anyplace else; however, except I always felt like I belonged there because of the people.

(Note:  The Netherlands is nice--very nice--and most of the people were great but it never felt quite like "home.")
