Question:

Pulled pork sandwiches in Germany?

We are going to Germany to visit some relatives and they want to have a cookout. I'd like to make pulled pork sandwiches. In the States I use a pork shoulder, which is either called a pork shoulder roast or Boston Butt. Are there similar cuts available in Germany? Do you know what it is called? Or will I just have to buy one here and carry it on ;-) ?

  1. You will have no problem finding this cut in Germany. It is actually the most commonly used cut of pork in Germany, beside Schnitzel (which is pork loin). I am German and I just hate it that you often can't find this cut in US stores, all you get is spare ribs or loin. The cut is called Schweinehals or Schweinenacken (literally meaning Pork neck) depending on what region of Germany you are in. you can either buy it whole or cut into ~1/2 inch slices.

    Have a fun trip

  2. I am not a "Cuts of meat" specialist, but would say yes you can get that. I have heared people buy Schweineschulter (porkshoulder) at the butchers.
