We are hopefully going to be getting this paint horse at my stable very soon, but I was curious.. if you go here:

you will see a saddle and a chestnut horse, he has a very short but pretty and full mane. I am having a mind block and don't exactly remember how my (hopefully) future horses mane looks, but it is rather long.

How can you get that look- short, yet full, yet natural looking mane?

  1. When I'm doing manes, I'll use a scissors if the horse has a super thin mane, or if the horse won't let you pull it.  It shortens the mane without thinning it.

You would do everything the same as if you were pulling; hold onto some longer hairs, tease the rest back, but then cut the longer hairs out instead of pulling them.  You cut somewhere shorter than what you want the final length of his mane to be, but not all the way up to the roots.  That way, it stays thick, but the edge of the mane still has the natural, feathered, pulled look.

  2. if you pull the mane using traditional pulling methods, you would pull out the longest strands, which would take away from the thick volume.  (I'm assuming you know how to pull a mane, if not you just grab a little piece of hair, push all the shorter hairs up, and pull out the remaining long hairs.)

To get this really full look, you would either need a horse with a really really thick mane, or you would have to pull the mane without actually pulling hair out.  You would need to cut it, but to get the natural look you want to almost think you're giving your horse layers.  Make it look natural by cutting a little unevenly through the mane, then facing the scissors up to be parallel with the mane and then just snipping the bottom of the mane.  This won't cut the hair across, but will make it look more natural.   You could also get a sharp comb so that you can cut the mane just using the comb.  this will give you a more natural look than using scissors.

    good luck!

  3. You want to pull their manes. There is a metal comb that you use, this works best and hurts the least for the horse. To keep it full just don;t thin out the bottoms, which is often done when braiding needs to be done. Make sure to never cut a horse's mane, the only time you may cut is on a horse's tail to give it the chopped straight look often seen in dressage horses. Let me know if you need directions on how to pull a mane. u want to make sure you have the technique down to make sure it is all one length

  4. well GOOD CUSTOMIZED nutrition makes for a full and thick healthy mane and tail but that along with cutting wen needed will get u that look but wen the mae gets TOO thick you can pull it...thats wat i do with my horses cuz i like the really think pony mane type look on my horses too lol

  5. i would do pulling and then tease the bottom layer of the mane to give it more volume
