Question:

Pulling up a plywood floor?

My home was built in 1920. I removed the carpet upstairs and found hardwood (I think it's pine). Downstairs there is plywood under the carpet, but I'm guessing there is something hidden under that. Is there anyway to find out? I don't have anyone to help me and I'm not really all that handy, but I am desperate to get rid of the nasty, stained carpet. I'll even live with the plywood if I have to...thanks much!

  1. The easiest way, is to look around the cold air return, for your furnace. If it is on the floor, pull up the cover, and look at the wood around the opening. If there is a second floor under the plywood, you should be able to see it. Good luck!

  2. We pulled up the nasty carpet and using a roofing shovel(looks like a spade but has a jaged egde) pulled up the plywood subfloor, sanded, stained and poly-urithaned.  Looks awesome although it is a bit labour intensive.

  3. The only thing to do is pull that carpet....cut it and roll it in a section at a time and throw it out.
