Question:

Pulling up laminate flooring?

I have laminate flooring that I need to pull up in a few places to put carpeting. It's not glued down (as far as I know). I'm not strong enough to pull it up by hand though. What tool is best for getting it up? Will I be able to get it up without taking off my baseboards?

  1. It depends on if you know the thickness of the floor or not and where you want to pull it up at. The floor will be one of three kinds  1 floating with the tongue and grooves glued together 2 floating snap lock edges or 3 glue down. However to answer your question if say you want to cut out a scare you can use a chalk line to mark off your area and then set your skill saws blade depth to barely cut thru the floor and saw it out and use a flat bar to pry it out.As for your base boards if floor was installed properly you should only have to remove the shoe mold , but some times people don't use shoe mold and just use the base board .I hope this helps

  2. remove whatever the is holdiing the laminate down either 1/4 round or the base molding from that point on you can just easily click it up you will be ablt to get it up faster then the person cleaning up after you is able to pick up you should be able to literly take a whole row up at one time

  3. A crowbar. That's what the flooring guy said when I asked.

  4. you need a scraper.  I have used a bunch of different kinds, but the one i prefer is actually for edging a sidewalk.  it has a half circle, rounded steel blade with a step lip.  break out a spot of laminate and start scraping.  if you can find one witha flat blade instead of the half circle, you can get a lot of the glue up too.
