  1. I had all four of mine out about 8 years ago. Really, for me it was a piece of cake. The oral surgeon wanted to give me gas and everything, but I got mine out only with a local of Novocaine. I could feel what they were doing ,but it didn't hurt me.  I was fine within a matter of days... really I felt fine by that afternoon, but I was tired.... from thinking about it so much.

Don't worry about the procedure. Just make sure you follow all the directions afterwards so that you don't end up with dry sockets, or other problems.

    Best of luck to you!

    Edit:

I did not have to take any pain medication after the surgery.

  2. Yep its not pleasant sorry to say, I had all four pulled at a hospitel (it was cheaper) and was awake the whole time! Thought they were going to break my jaw! Sorry just being honest, but I also know other people who have had theirs out and its not too bad, but if youve got to get it done then you really dont have a choice. Good luck!

  3. I was terrified at the idea of surgery and I still feel that way. When I went to get my wisdom teeth removed, my blood pressure was so high I couldn't be given anesthesia right away. My doctor got me talking about school (I went to the same university as he did) and while I was distracted, my BP went down enough and they were able to knock me out finally. They had to cut all 4 of mine out and the bottom ones, I was told, were extremely difficult.

The pain was manageable, but I was home alone after surgery, which I do not recommend. Make sure there is someone there! I ended up dehydrated (my mouth was completely numb and I had difficulty even finding my mouth) and my pain meds and antibiotics made me sick. I was able to eat soup that same day. I was sick again that night, but the next day I was completely fine. I would say it was worse than having the flu for a day. My prescriptions made my head feel a bit fuzzy, though. I was eating solid food in a week.

For food, I recommend broth-based soup and my doctor said to drink soda (don't use a straw!) - something to do with the carbonation.

  4. I got my wisdom teeth out two weeks ago and I was freaking out before. Ive never had any sort of surgery or getting any teeth pulled. I was not put to sleep when I got my teeth out, I was fully awake. The doctor gave me these sedatives to calm my nerves 10 min before.  I felt like I didnt care about anything. I was just laying in the chair, waiting. Then the doctor gave me nitrous oxide (which is very amazing heh) and then I got my numbing shots eek. That is the only thing you feel during the whole procedure. After your mouth is numb, you feel nothing. You barely remember even being there when you get home and sleep =) Good luck, it is not painful at all as long as you eat well and just sleep!

  5. You will be put to sleep when the dentist pulls the teeth. They will hurt for a few days but the dentist will give you some really powerful pain pills. These will work while the worst of the pain occurs. You be hurting for a week or so. But, if you leave the wisdom teeth in, they will hurt even more and give you problems as long as they are in.

  6. DON'T WORRY.

I got all four of mine pulled 7 days ago. Ask to be sedated, preferably with the IV or funny gas. You don't feel a thing. Afterwards they have you on heavy medication and you will pretty much sleep all day. The only bad part about it is, you look crazy with gauze stuffed in your mouth and ice packs on your cheeks (for the swelling). Don't worry!! It's not painful at all. You should be glad that you are getting your teeth out- they can cause serious complications if they get impacted or something like that. And dry sockets are very rare- I saw that in one of the other answers.

  7. at least your going to a better place O:) lol.

  8. Hey! I'm 15 and I had my wisdom teeth pulled last October. I was really scared too and nervous. What happened was I went in a room and I sat in a chair and then the doctor explained everything that was going to happen and it made me feel a little better. Then his nurse gave me an IV in my arm and then she put a mask on me to give me laughing gas and then I fell asleep. When I woke up it was really weird. My teeth were hurting a lot. But it's different for everyone. Sometimes your teeth hurt but sometimes they don't. Well my teeth hurt for the next couple of days and they were bleeding a lot so I had to have gauges in my mouth. It was really hard to eat anything so I had to eat well actually drink some soup. I had a lot of rest and took some painkillers the doctor gave me. After a few days my teeth were fine. Hey I'm really sorry I am telling you all the bad stuff but this is the truth. I hope you have the best of luck and I will pray for you. God Bless You!

  9. I just had 4 of mine pulled a month ago. There are three ways to get them done. The first way is with local anesthesia in the mouth. (9-12 shots of novicane)  The second is laughing gas then the 9-12 shots. Third way (the way mine was done) is to be knocked out completely for the entire surgery. They give you an iv and you fall asleep and wake up an hour or so later. I suggest this way. I hate shots, and had them in the mouth when i was little and getting other teeth pulled and they hurt! After the surgery i was given three perscriptions. One for viccadan one to reduce swelling and the other for penicciln. The viccadan put me to sleep so after a couple days i was okay with just a couple advil. i kept bags of ice on both sides of my face for the first 3 days. eating milkshakes was the best feeling(cant use a straw with them)  the swelling lasted about a week maybe a little longer. i had stiches on two of the four teeth which they removed in about 10 seconds 5 days afterward. you are stuck eating jello, applesause, adn soft foods for at least a week then afterwards you have to flush the holes to make sure food doesnt get stuck inside. 3 out of my four holes are closed up. the fourth one is healed but the hole is still there. stuff gets stuck every once in a while but for the most part doesnt bother me. it will be a crappy first week but after that its over. im a 17 yr old girl, if that helps...

  10. I've only had my upper two wisdom teeth extracted in the dentist office. I still have my lower ones because they'll have to be cut out surgically.

The hygenist warned me that lower wisdom tooth extraction sites are more prone to 'dry socket', a painful condition which could manifest during the healing process. To lessen the risk, post-procedure you're not supposed to suck...no straws, no smoking, etc...to keep the blood clotted at the extraction site.

My teeth were extracted separately. Each time, there was no pain after the local painkiller was administered. I felt pressure, but no pain, as the dentist pushed against my tooth with a metal chisel-type instrument. Then, a rolled up piece of gauze was inserted into my mouth, and I was told to bite and keep pressure on it for 20 minutes.

The most painful part of all is the numbing procedure. The first time, the dentist gave me the shots, and it hurt tremendously. BUT..the second time, the hygenist administered the shots, and--although it was slightly uncomfortable--it was a million times less painful than when the dentist did it. So, I think the pain you can anticipate really depends on who's giving you the shots. It's about three or four shots around each tooth...

Like I said, there's no pain after the shots during the procedure, just pressure.

Healing time for me was minimal. The dentist wrote me a scrip for Vicodin, but I only had to take it the first day. I was eating normally by day two. Best part of all, my headaches went away!

Hope it goes well for you. Any discomfort or pain you go through will be worth it; I promise.
