Pumas crush Romania by 43-8 in Rugby World Cup Pool B match
The Pumas grabbed their first victory in the ongoing Rugby World Cup 2011 after crushing Romania in its second match of the event by 43-8 on September 17 in Invercargill. Argentina scored six tries to thump the opponents as Romania remained unimpressive
with its defending and attacking lines and cut a sorry figure in the end.
Argentina was missing a couple of big names including their regular skipper Felipe Contepomi and Gonzalo Tiesi. Contepomi has passing through a difficult phase because of a rib injury while Gonzalo Tiesi is not part of Argentinean squad anymore because of
a devastating knee injury. The squad also made a few positional changes in their back bunches as Lucas Gonzales was put at the full-half’s position and Santiago Fernandez was deployed at backlines.
Romania also made two changes in their defence orders and decided to make no change in its forward combination. It was a crucial match for both sides as they had lost their earlier matches in the tournament. Argentina lost to England and Romania surrendered
to Scotland.
Santiago Fernandez earned a five point lead for the Pumas in the fifth minute of the match which was extended to 7-0 by Rodriguez with a conversion goal. The Pumas were successful in putting early pressure on the rusty Romanian side with an offensive beginnings
and managed to take a handsome lead of 26-8 at half-time. Argentina scored a further three tries in the match before the interval as the Romanian defence was looked ordinary before the rampant Pumas.
Manuel Leguizamon, Juan Figallo and Lucas Gonzalo were the other try scorer for Argentina before the break. Meanwhile, Romania scored just eight points during the first part of the game.
Argentina continued with their good work in the second-half too and added a few quick points to their total right after the break. Rodriguez helped his side with a three pointer in the 45th minute of the match. Romania had a miserable day with
their defencive discipline as they committed many errors in tackling.
Juan Imhoff scored the fifth of the match and the first of second-half try in the 63rd minute of the match and put his side in a comfortable position of 36-8. A further try from Genaro Fessia sealed the victory for Pumas with an impressive total
of 43-8. Romania remained scoreless in the second-half.
