Question:

Pumping breast milk too soon?

So I'm pregnant with my first baby, due in November. I plan on breast feeding, but would like to pump to have some on hand in case something happens and I have to leave the baby with a sitter. How soon is too soon to pump your own milk and have baby take it by bottle and not breast? Is the transition a hard one? I don't want to confuse her and have her only want bottle and not breast.

  1. You can start pumping in the hospital. My little one had issues and I was given a manual pump to try at the hospital. I agree with the other poster that one bottle a day will not hinder your child and that he or she will be willing to take a bottle when you can not be around. I was able to do both breast and bottle with my second son successfully.

  2. It sounds like you would benefit from reading the book, "My First 300 Babies".    She talks about giving one feeding everyday with the bottle if you are breastfeeding, so that if you do have to leave your baby, the baby will readily take the bottle.  Because the majority of the feedings will be done at the breast, there will not be a confusion :-)  Babies are confused that easily - it's the mothers that are confused :-)  Get the book, it's super helpful and a easy read.

  3. I believe both of those first answers are incorrect please read from a reputable site for answers. Breastfeeding is a great thing for baby and you and pumping makes it convienient for emergencies or tie away,

and no way can pumping make your supply go away...the more you take the more you make...

  4. wait until after the birth, and then give it atleast 6 weeks so that your supply is where it should be and also you'll know how it's going for the 2 of you

  5. at least two weeks i pumped to early with my first and my milk dried up completly
