  1. step forward with your front foot.

  2. A punch is the same whether you are a boxer, a streetfighter, a martial artist, or just a regular joe off the street. The most effective punches combine 4 things.  The first is it is not telegraphed, meaning it is quick and decisive. You don't wind up and crank back and show your opponent what you are about to do. To do this your hands must stay in front of you and be released forward to the target. The second factor of a good punch is that there is weight transfer. As this strike goes into motion the body weight of the person throwing the punch is moving slighly toward target. Just enough to make the stike have mass to back it's velocity and anchor it. The power for anything you do whether swinging a baseball bat, a golf club, or your arm comes from the ground up. The ground specifically your feet on the ground. Your feet are your only connection to this planet and are where your power comes from. That is why weight transfer is very important and your feet facilitate that. The third important part of a good strike is timing. Have you ever seen anyone get into a fight and they are both throwing punches as hard as they can but it looks as if they aren't even doing any damage? Or maybe their hands aren't even moving? That's because they aren't. Usually the people who don't know what they are doing have very tense hands and arms. If you watch Bruce Lee he was never making a fist or squeezing his hands. He kept them loose until just before impact. That tension when timed correctly can do more damage than your buddy's haymaker. To do this you make a fist but you keep it loose and just before impact you tighten it and the muscles in your arm so they all become rock solid. This turns your flesh and bones into mortar and bricks, but it has to be timed correctly to work. The last and most important in my opinion factor of a good punch is recovery. The speed at which you get back to your fighting position is what can win or lose a fight. A good srike will fascilitate this. When you are finished smashing thier nose in you have to get right back to your fighting stance, athletic and balanced, this will make it hard for your opponent to take advantage of you if you failed to make contact with your punch or you struck them in a way that didn't stop them. So try these methods out and see what you come up with.

  3. Keep your feet planted, don't try to chase the target, you may lose your balance. Then not only is your strike powerless, but you may fall on the ground and give the advantage to your opponent.

  4. Hitch nailed it, although in my opinion i like keeping my muscles relaxed while punching and not tense at the last moment, but tensed at the last moment before impact is good to.
