Pune Warriors' request to play five overseas players unlikely to get approved in-time – Cricket News Update
The IPL franchise, Sahara Pune http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warriors-c861 is likely to follow the existing rule of playing only four overseas players at the most in the upcoming fifth edition of the Indian Premier League starting in Chennai on April 4, 2012.
Owing to their weak bench strength, the Warriors had requested the General Council of the IPL to allow them to field more than four imports in a match in the latest edition of the lucrative league, but the request is unlikely to get the approval in time.
A senior BCCI official, on the condition of anonymity, has told media reporters that the Warriors request will be considered by the IPL’s governing council only after “all the other franchises agree in-principle”. However, given the time constraint, the
request is unlikely to receive the required approval before February 29, last date for submitting teams to the General Council.
"As of now atleast two franchises are there who may not give their consent and Warriors will then have to play with four overseas players,” said a senior Indian board member, adding that it would solely be the decision of the working committee and BCCI cannot
interfere in this matter.
The official further added that even if the franchises agree to allow the Pune Warriors to play five foreign players, the GC will forward the request to the working committee for ratification and this might not be completed within the required time.
"Even if Warriors manage to get consent from eight other franchises, the GC would refer the matter to Working Committee who would then have to ratify it. It might not be possible to do it within the existing time-frame," he further added.
