Question:

Punishment for minors getting a tattoo?

I'm 16 and live in Minnesota. I want a memorial tattoo for my mom, but my dad won't go for it, mostly because we don't get along. I know it's illegal to tattoo a minor, and the tattoo artist could face fines and other punishments. But if I get my tattoo I won't tell anyone, even police (if it comes down to that) who tattooed me. If I do get it, and my dad tells authorities, what would my punishment from the police be, if any?

  1. Minnesota Tattoo Laws

    609.2246. Tattoos; minors

Subdivision 1. Requirements. No person under the age of 18 may receive a tattoo unless the person provides written parental consent to the tattoo. The consent must include both the custodial and noncustodial parents, where applicable.

Subd. 2. Definition. For the purposes of this section, "tattoo" means an indelible mark or figure fixed on the body by insertion of pigment under the skin or by production of scars.

Subd. 3. Penalty. A person who provides a tattoo to a minor in violation of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor.

diversion most likely if charged and then nothing I would bet.  Oh wait, it is a misdemeanor for the provider.  You can get a tatoo legally.  Legally no one can give you one.

  2. They won't do anything to you, but I would recommend waiting awhile to avoid problems.

  3. Your punishment?  Other than your parents, none.  But why would you put another person's well being and livelihood in jeopardy.  I understand you wish to memorialize your mother, but that sentiment does not justify the possibility of the artist being charged with a crime.

  4. probly nothing but everyone else will get in trouble because of you
