Punishment for others crimes?

Person punished whole team for one persons mistake!?

According to someone that works with me, she recons that when her children go into the NAVY to live on a ship, that if one person misbehaves that the whole team could face sanctions.

She claims that this actually encourages team work by getting the team members to help punish the accused; which is exactly what would tear a team apart due to the arguements.

She says that the other members of the team have a resposibility to disipline thier peers.

Strange or what?

My hypothesis for this is that the team leader cannot be bothered to investigate the acts of misconduct properly and will punish everyone to get at the accused.

The act of saying they know who it is would therefore have to be an excuse to get out of knowing truthfully who is to blame, on the premises that they appeared to have made a mistake.

What would your thoughts be for the psychological causes of this phenomena?

  1. that group punishment idea doesn't work too well outside the military, becasue the military owns your hide and you are working for large complex goals. In civilian life people have the time, motivation and freedom to take action against such unfair dictators.

  2. Yeah,...stay out of the military. You couldn't hang.
