Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka qualify for U-17 Junior National Hockey Championship: Hockey Recap
The hockey teams including Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka won their respective matches and moved forward into the quarter-final stage of the Boys’ U-17 Junior National Championship that took place in Mumbai, city of India on June 04, 2011.
In the opening match of the day, Punjab edged past MP Hockey Academy by a single goal, 3-2. Despite the fact Punjab only required a draw. They contested the game with cracking spirit and won the game. The strikers from Punjab were on a high verge, as they
notched three unanswered goals in the first half of play to put their opponents under intense pressure.
However, the attackers from MP Hockey Academy were not sitting silently and watching the game go by. They received a couple of goals in the second half and reduced the lead down to a single goal, 3-2. Conversely, they failed to get the equaliser and lost
the game. With the win in the crucial contest, Punjab moved into the quarter-final round of the event.
Tamil Nadu defeated Pune DHA in the second match of the day and confirmed their place in the next round. They scored three goals against the solitary score of their competitors and won the game with heavy margin.
Pune DHA dominated the field for the first 25 minutes of the game. However, they revived up their strike and stormed back with three back-to-back attempts. With five minutes into the game, Pune DHA earned their first short-corner and opened the scoring.
Anand Gaikwad converted the short-corner and took the game into their favour. D. Surandar of Tamil Nadu scored his first of two goals and tied the knots at 1-1.
In the remaining time period, Surandar and V. Madan Kumar notched one goal apiece and sealed the Tamil Nadu victory in the crucial contest with confirming their berth in the quarter-final round.
In another match, Karnataka trounced Tripura by impressive nine goals, 9-0 and sealed their spot in the next stage.
In the heavy margin victory, Basavaraj scored three goals while his team-mates, Pratik T.V and Somanna P.A, added two goals each in the win. In addition, Ganapathy M.B and Bopanna M.S chipped in a single goal apiece in the triumph.
In another group contest, Dadra & Nagar Haveli thrashed Bihar by seven goals, 8-1. From the winning side, Pruthvi Prashant, Swapnil Shinde, Saurabh Bhayadekar and Pardesh S. Sunil scored two goals each. From the other side, Alok Kumar could only score just
one goal in the match and lost the game.
The game between Gujarat and Vidarbha concluded without any result due to heavy showers. Vidharbha led the game until the downpour of rain by five goals. However, it ended in a draw.
