Punjab v Bengal – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kumar-Shri-Ranjitsinhji-c71870 Trophy (Group A) – Match Update
Three stellar centuries from Jiwanjot Singh, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mayank-Sidhana-c75436, and Uday Kaul, saw Punjab claiming a massive victory over Bengal by a margin of an innings and 27 runs, in their Group A match during the ongoing Ranji Trophy, played from November 9 to 12 at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, Chandigarh. The victory was Punjab’s second win by an innings, and propelled them to the top of group A.
The match kicked off with Punjab winning the toss and choosing to field first. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sandeep-Sharma-c88505 (24-7-53-2) chipped in with supporting performances.
Bengal’s top order managed to get starts, but failed to capitalise on them – however, middle-order batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/WP-Saha-c2800 (98) and Laxmi Shukla (62) both chipped in with useful scores, and aided by small contributions from the rest of the batting order, Bengal posted a first innings total of 326 before they were all out on the second day of play.
Bengal then made attempts to launch a defence of their total, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833’s innings hinged around the hundreds racked up by these three batsmen and on the third day of play, the team declared at a gargantuan 579, with 7 wickets down.
Gony (15-2-41-5) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Siddarth-Kaul-c90195 (17-3-58-4) then proceeded to seal the deal for their team, keeping the Bengal batsmen in line to ensure they did not come anywhere near the total posted by Punjab.
Once again, Saha (57) and Shukla (91*) remained the stand-out batsmen for Bengal, but their efforts went unsupported by the remainder of the batting order. Jayojit Basu (11) and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Manoj-Tiwary-c1890 (30) were the only other batsmen who managed to reach double figures – however, their contributions were far from substantial.
Bengal eventually proved unable to meet the challenge, and found themselves all out at 226 on the fourth day of play, with Punjab going on to win comprehensively, by an innings and 27 runs.
