  1. Direct quotes begin with a capital letter

You use a comma before:  Mary asked, "Where are you going?"

or after: Mark replied, "I'm going to the movies."

Begin a new paragraph every time the speaker changes.

Use quotation marks at the beginning and end of the direct quote.

  2. Not every quotation begins with a capital. Only if the quotation starts without something before it. Commas are always necessary before the quotation.

    For example:

    She said, "stop touching me."

    "Stop touching me," she said.
