Pupo, Bourez and Buchan make the Round 2 cut at Vans US Open of Surfing – Surfing news
Brazil’s Miguel Pupo, French Polynesia’s Michel Bourez and Australia’s Adrian Buchan secured their place in the second round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Vans US Open of Surfing after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 1 (Round of 96) heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Monday, July 22, 2013.
Brazil’s Willian Cardoso, America’s Dane Reynolds and his fellow compatriot Nathaniel Curran successfully advanced into the second round as well after finishing second in their respective Round 1 heats.
The opening day of the latest ASP Prime event promised to deliver a heavy dose of thrilling action and enthralling battles as pulsing four-to-six foot waves at the main event site played host to the top surfing talent from around the globe.
Pupo found himself pitted against his compatriot Cardoso, Hawaii’s Torrey Meister and Australia’s Lincoln Taylor in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.
The Brazilian initially struggled a little to adapt to the conditions on hand, but eventually warmed up to them and consequently got to a heat-total of 12.60 points, which proved sufficient to grab the win.
Cardoso finished with a heat-total of 11.64 points to grab second place, whereas Meister and Taylor registered a heat-total of 11.00 and 6.84 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The eighth heat saw Bourez take on Reynolds, Hawaii’s Keanu Asing and France’s Joan Duru.
The French Polynesian surfer showed-off his strong backhand combinations on a couple of juicy waves to conclude the heat with a two-wave total of 16.00 points. The score kept him in a dominant position until the end to seal the fate of the four-man battle in his favour.
Reynolds successfully extended his life in the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 12.40 points to grab second place. Asing registered a heat-total of 12.07 points to finish third, while Duru was forced to settle for fourth place after finishing with a heat-total of 10.44 points.
The ninth heat saw Buchan finish on top of Curran, Hawaii’s Mason Ho and Brazil’s Messias Felix to comfortably make his way into the next round.
The Australian surfer put on a solid performance to get to a heat-total of 14.33 points, which proved more than adequate to earn him the win.
Curran grabbed second place with a heat-total of 8.80 points, whereas Ho and Felix finished with a heat-total of 8.74 and 8.20 points respectively.
