  1. omg dogs have periods? wow i never knew that just keep her in a comfy spot like a doggie bed and stay by her side

  2. Get her spayed then it really is no worry anymore.

  3. dogs do not have periods- they are in heat

when in heat she may have bleeding for 10-14 days, during this time if she is mated with an intact male she may become pregnant.  Unlike humans who have a monthly period after shedding an egg that was not fertilized.  She will go into heat approx. every 6months until you have her spayed, or she dies.  Dogs do not go into menopause like humans.

Having her spayed means she won't be a Mom, she is less likely to get mammary cancers, and a nasty infection called a pyometra.

  4. She will normally be in season (period??!! lol) for 21 days.  But you should allow a few days beyond if she's around other dogs, just to be safe.   She will bleed (red) for about the first 10 or so days, and then it will fade to a straw-colour which is the time she will start to be ready to be mated.  And obviously the time you need to be at your most vigilant!  If this is her first season, she may not go the full 21 days, although if she's now a year, she'll probably have the full-on season.

Dogs are not (normally) like us humans in terms of periods - there isn't usually any pain involved.  She may just be 'in pain' over the fact that she's not going to be allowed to follow her natural instincts, and get bred lol.

Suggest you consider getting her spayed about 2+ months after this season ends, so she's not going to need confining twice a year (and don't take her out for a walk, for the sake of the local dog population please).  The earlier a female is spayed the less the risk of her developing mammary tumours in later life - might not happen of course, but it's not worth the risk really.

    Hope this helps.

  5. If she is acting uncomfortable I'd call my vet. It's called a heat period when they are able to become pregnant and I'm not sure, but my father used to say it's 21 days, 7 coming in, 7 in and 7 going out, but that would be another good question for your vet.

  6. Dogs don't get "Periods" like a human female does - It's called Estrus and physiologically, it's the opposite of a "Period" (Google 'Dog Estrus' for more info).

It lasts for Approximately 3 weeks (21 days) and during that time, you need to keep her away from any intact (Not neutered) dogs.  Don't even leave her unattended in your backyard - Males will do ANYTHING to get to her right now.

She will also spot during her heat cycle - You can get special products for her at the pet store.

Now is a great time to call the Vet and make an appointment to have her spayed in 4-5 weeks, that way neither of you will need to deal with it again in the future.

  7. Your dog is in heat.  It will last about three weeks.  First, you must keep her away from all male dogs, never leave her alone, even if your backyard is fenced.  Her scent will attract the boys and it's easy to end up with an unwanted litter of puppies.

Call your vet and make an appointment to get her spayed after the heat cycle so that you will not have to deal with this again.  You won't have to worry about her getting pregnant and she will be much healthier and happier as well.

Remember, don't let her out of your sight!  :)
