Ok So as most of you know I am getting a dog next month. A gorgeous catahoula pup. Anyways due to a MASSIVE plumbing bill thanks to a 2yr old terror and some toys and other stuff I am now getting him two weeks later than planned. Anyways its been about 6 years since I have had a dog that was my actual responsibility and honestly i am nervous and excited at the same time.

Do to a job change for my BF we are both home during the day with the exception of the three days that I am at work and he works nights so that's not the issue.

When my last two dogs were killed I really never thought I would have a dog again abut eventually got to the point that I really missed having a dog around.

Anyways so my question is for anyone who had a big gap in between having dogs and not having dogs how did you feel that firs time you brought a new puppy/dog into your life?

  1. I was excited, but absolutely overwhelmed when I first brought her home.

I had forgotten how much I hate puppies!  Yes, they are cute, and fun... but for a person who absolutely has to sleep a full night's sleep in order to function, waking up in the middle of the night to let the dog out is brutal!

You sound like you will provide a great home for the pup - good luck!

  2. I just had to jump in.  I haven't been without a dog since I was 10, and I am almost 53.  As being a dog lover, that is a really long time, especially now that you have to wait an extra 2 weeks.  My guess is that it would be like waiting for the birth of a child, both nervous and excited, all at the same time.  (With out the pain of labor, thank God)  I will bet that you will have tears of joy the first time you hold the little guy/gal in your arms.  Rayven, I have been watching all of you answers and admire you very much.  You will be the perfect dog mommy, in my eyes.  Those 2 extra weeks that you have to wait can only mean that your new pup will be twice as great as you expected.  I sure wish you the best.  Do you have a name chosen, yet?  Keep us all posted, ok?

  3. It seems that you and your BF have a lot going on. If you are not sure how you will feel bringing a new dog/puppy into your life perhaps you should hold off. You shouldn't be feeling nervous about taking on the responsibility for a dog if it is truley the right decision. You should have thought this through long before you decided to get a new dog.

  4. I think when my GSD died it was another 3 years before we got Buster, quite honestly I was scared out of my mind when he came home for the first few days all I was thinking was "OMG a new dog what do I do" after about a week my mind started to calm down and I was able to focus on taking care of him and here we are now a year and 3 months later and all is going well
