my baby is 11 weeks old and I have still been tryin to train her to stop bitting. She playfully bites but I read some books about it and it says that when puppies bite they try to see if they can dominate you and you have to stop them to show them that you are in control. So far when she bites me I stop her and say "No" and sometimes I close her mouth when I do it. I was wondering if anybody else has a problem with their puppy/dog bitting all the time? Any suggestions?

  1. All pups bite - but i would say it's more of a "play" thing than a dominance thing right now. You DO have to show them you are in control of that play though, just like their litter mates do when they play too hard.

I got my dog out of the habit by stopping play when she bit too hard. They learn quickly that rough play equals no play.

  2. This has to be nipped in the bud now, before she gets the idea that biting is acceptable.  She doesn't understand the word no.  When she bites, squeal "OW!" in a high pitched voice, and ignore her.  She'll eventually understand that you don't like it when she bites, and play time stops.

    Edit: She's adorable btw :)

  3. well, that may be true in some cases. but sometimes she's just playing. try and trade your hand for a chew toy. my pup did that, but she was just playing.

but your dog might also be teething. when a dog bites down on something -just like a kid- it feels better on her gums. i used to soak and freeze a rubber chew toy and let her have a go at that. that seemed to make her feel better, but you may want to keep her outside or somewhere where it's okay to get the floors wet.

so if you don't like it when she's just play bitting, just tell her "no". and keep at it until she learns.

  4. She is a tiny puppy and learning and they play bite for upto 5 months before they start calming down.

You can when she bites.......turn your back and ignore her for 10 minutes or yelp loudly as if you were her litter mate and ignore her or spray some ater in her face from a squirter bottle and say no in a very firm voice!!!

Just remember they are teething and playing and its all normal , it will calm down also!!!

  5. My dog bites all the time, it's not a hard bite at all it's more like he is holding your hand with his mouth...  I know it sounds weird!  But he only does it when he's really excited, like when we come home from work he'll grab on to our hands by biting them.  I never thought of it as being dominate, I think of it as he's showing affection.  But maybe your dog has a more aggressive bite?

  6. our puppy had the exact same problem

we went to the vet and they said to give them a toy instead because they're teething and theyre in pain, it's just like a baby human. if they're past their teething satge do what they do in the wild, pin them down by the neck, close their mouth, or if it's really bad, bite them back. when you close their mouth or pin them down make it quick, if they wiggle out of it then it does more harm than good.

  7. Every time she bites you, yelp really loudly and walk away. Give it a couple of minutes and go back and stroke her. Repeat as many times as you need to.

  8. Most likely, your puppy is teething - no amount of training will stop her from finding something to chew on. Invest in some puppy teething toys and direct her attention to the toys when she nips you; if she continued to nip, say "No", and get up and ignore her. She'll eventually get that if she nips, playtime is over.

Giving her attention and holding her when she nips will only excite her and most likely cause her to nip you more often.

  9. This has nothing to do with dominance, all puppies do this. When he bites you, yell OUCH! and immediately get up and walk away. Do this whenever your puppy bites you. This will teach your puppy that whenever he bites you, play time is over.
