Puppy deworming. What kinds of worms does it get rid of?

When a vet deworms puppies, what kind of worms is the medication for? I am not sure if it is for all kinds of worms or just roundworms. I am taking care of my aunts new 7 week old puppy who was dewormed at the vet on Friday, but she has tapeworms coming out of her bottom. Does the dewormer that the vet uses on new puppies get rid of tapeworms and they are just not all gone yet or does she need to go back to the vet for a different kind of dewormer?

  1. If the vet de-wormed the puppy on Friday, I would not give the dog another worming medication.

First of all, you don't know what kind of worms the puppy had and over the counter medications usually only work on one type of worm.  You could be doing more harm than by giving the pup another de-wormer so soon.

  2. If the vet did a fecal on the pup before deworming it, he should have been able to diagnose the types of worms and treat what the pup had.  I would call the vet and ask specifically whether he treated for tapes.

  3. I don't think the vet would have wormed a puppy that young for tape worms.  Usually, it would be round worms, pin worms, and hook worms.  Are you sure that you are seeing tape worms?  Normally, all you would see would be a small white speck about the size of a piece of rice in the stool if the dog has tape worms.  If you are seeing a long spaghetti type worm, that would be round worms and puppies can pass them for several days after being wormed.  If this is the case, the pup will need to be wormed again in about 10 days to two weeks to make sure that all of the worms have been killed.

  4. It depends on the wormer the vet used.  Are the tapeworms dead or alive? Sounds like it needs some Drontol wormer.

  5. The vet usually gives a general dewormer containing pyrantel pamoate, which only kills roundworms and hookworms. If the pup has tapeworms or whipworms ,different medications are needed. Also,if your pup has tapeworms, she probably also has fleas,as tapeworms are carried by fleas. So you need praziquantel ( Droncit) for the tapeworms, and Frontline Plus for the fleas.
