Question:

Puppy dreaming or having seizures?

My pup is 7 weeks old and she is a boxer and a lab mix (there is a chance that the dad was a pit bull, but she is to little to really tell)

She has been having what seem to be normal puppy dreams. Lots of kicking, and bits of whining an barking. Tonight was differnet though. She started to kick really hard and it almost looked like she was shaking. When I touched her she was 100% limp it was very freaky. Her eyes were also half open and moving fast (rapid eye movement?) It took my a minute or so to wake her up and when I did she seemed fine.

I am sure that I am over reactigng, but I want to make sure there isn't much to worry about. She will go to the vet Friday. Any advice or tips?

  1. hm...my dog has only ever had the twitches of the feet and sometimes her eyes are a bit open so thats pretty normal but if she was limp and shaking...i would tell the vet on friday, if it continues or gets worse go sooner then go earlier

  2. shes having a seizure. thats good that shes going to the vet the vet will do alot of tests on her it may be a long day but be prepared. the vet bill will be high in money but its worth it for a loving fun friend. a tip is that try to calm her down play with her be kind care with all of your heart that might calm her down.

  3. Awwww, she's dreaming.  It's very common, especially in young puppies.

My 3 year old dog still does it, though not as often.  Sometimes now though, she'll make little noises in her sleep while she's dreaming  :-)

You don't have to worry about it at all.  I think it's really very sweet that you're so concerned.

  4. dogs dream just like humans

  5. I would say, she's only dreaming.  My pug is 7 years old and still dreams like that, almost running in his sleep, whining, barking even growling.  when I touch him, he is very hard to waken and extremely limp at first.  Like you, I was concerned so I asked my doctor and she reassured me that he was only dreaming.

All that said, my niece has a boxer who does have seizures/epilepsy and was told that boxers have a tendency to have that problem, they don't know why.  But there is medication that can keep it under control.

    Good luck.

  6. Here is an article that describes the various kinds of seizures. It sounds like you pup may have had a petit mal seizure but your can read the description and judge what you saw better than I can.

If he did have a seizure, there is a Yahoo! group you may want to join of owners of dogs with seizure disorder called k9epileptics.

  7. Chances are it was just dreaming.  Also, at this age, the brain is still in development.  If it were seizures, the dog would probably not have much energy and be rather groggy for a little bit after.  However, check with your vet on Friday.  If it is happens again prior to Friday, you may want to call sooner.

  8. My Wheaton Terrier still does it and he's 4 years old.  He's definately dreaming.  Keep a journal of what your dog does during the day.  They dream about what occurred that day.  Mine is more active in his dreams if he chased a squirrel or cat that day.  If he was just home because of rain then I don't notice any action in his dreams.

  9. i actually took my boxer puppy to the vet for that he looked at me like i was retarded and told me she was just dreaming but better safe than sorry

  10. I think its dog puberty.

  11. Probably she is just dreaming, but I figure if it's enough to make you wonder, it's worth asking about.  It just shows how much you care about your dog.

  12. Not so much with the dreaming thing....Pretty sure it was a seizure, usually when you try to wake them or get their attention and they don't respond quickly that means it is a seizure.  If she is having them this young you definitely need to have it checked by your vet sooner than later.
