Question:

Puppy eliminating in crate?

by  |  earlier

I have a 11 week old puppy. When I am home she goes to the door when she has to go potty. I take her out, and when she goes, I praise her and then pet her and immediately bring her in. The problem is that when I put her in her crate she whines, then immediately eliminates. Is this something that is normal or is there something I can do to eliminate this problem?

Thank you

  1. Are you waiting until she's completely finished?  When you take her out is she peeing then pooping in her crate?  Or is she pooping outside and peeing in her crate or does she pee outside then pee in her crate?

If it's peeing then pooping in the crate then you didn't stay out side long enough for her to completely empty her bowels.  Puppies probably need to pee up to 30 times a day, and p**p probably no less than 3 times possibly more.  If you take outside 15-30 minutes after each meal then you can gage about when she'll need to p**p again and get her outside before she has an accident.

If she was purchased from a petstore then using a crate is pointless since she's been living in a crate where she's had no choice but to eliminate in it.

Just be consistent in getting her out every 2 hours like clockwork, don't punish if she has has an accident, reward with treats when she goes outside, use a command word so she associates it with going outside like Potty Time or Go Potty, if you are consistent you can train a dog to pee on command as well as p**p, mine will pee on command makes taking outside so much easier and quicker.

    Good luck
