Puppy getting spayed..question..?

Hey,.. I just adopted a puppy from a shelter, and of course before we bring her home she has to be spayed. Her surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning and we are getting her the day after in the afternoon. Will she be almost back to herself by that time? Can we still walk her if she's up to it? I know we can't rough house but is it ok to do simple things? Thanks..

  1. It's major surgery so don't let her jump on things or run around much.  Stitches are in two layers, inside and outside.  They'll dissolve on the inside, ask the place if she needs the outer ones taken out in 10 days or if they're disolvable also.

Keep her quiet, no roughhousing.  She can walk just fine, but if she stops don't make her move a lot. ANd no putting pressure on the area by picking her up.  Be cautious how to lift her so the stiches aren't stretched. You can ask them how to do that without hurting her.

The area will heal up in a few weeks.  She'll be fine.

  2. well : according to " Dogs " they are Answers  Pets

  3. hi,

Spaying or neutering will keep your dog from getting pregnant or impregnating another dog. Females get the spay surgery, which removes the ovaries and uterus, while a neuter surgery removes a male dog's testicles.

If you're cringing after reading this last sentence, consider this: the surgery provides many health and behavior benefits, and you won't find yourself with a bunch of puppies who need homes other than yours.

  4. She'll be able to go for walks but you have to keep her from doing any jumping at all and not let her do much running until her stitches come out.  You also have to be very careful not to let the incision get wet until it's totally healed.  They should send her home with an E-collar to wear whenever you can't watch her.  That's to make sure she can't chew or tear out the stitches - they get really itchy when they're healing.

By the time you get her, the affects from the anesthetic should have pretty much worn off so she'll be eating and drinking, but she'll still be in a little pain unless they send home pain meds with her.  They should give you all the info you need for her care.

  5. She  will be lethargic for a few days after the surgery and probably won't eat too much either. It is ok to walk her short distances and play gently with her. Make sure you watch her incision, you don't want to see any drainage or her messing with it too much.

Other than that she should be fine.
