Question:

Purchaser quit - I was assistant - more work for me - do I ask for a raise?

I've been with my company for 1 1/2 years and the person in charge of purchasing just quit. I've had several positions within the company, most recently I was moved into her office to assist her as well as do my current duties. In January of this year, there were three employees working in three positions (Production Mgr, Master Scheduler and Purchasing Asst). One quit and one got fired, and I do all three jobs now, with little problem.

When the Purch.assistant quit, instead of hiring another one, I was asked if I would be interested in taking over those tasks and I received a 6K raise. I agreed. I've moved to purchasing two weeks ago, and now I'm the only one in here!

Instead of hiring a new Purchasing Agent, they are transferring another office person here to train (they offered him 10K raise, but he makes less than me). So... I just got 6K raise to assist, but now I have the most experience and am talking to all the vendors. Do I bring up another raise? Help/advice pl

  1. Seems too soon to be asking for another raise.  Maybe just pose the question, "In light of my additional work-load, how soon do you anticipate I will be eligible for another raise?"  That should at least open the door to the topic and let your boss know that work load is considerably more than before.  Or maybe you could request over-time to get all of your work done.  If your work load is not enough to justify overtime and you have not been put in a position of management (have employees that answer to you / that you must supervise) then I'm not sure a raise is warrented so soon.
