Question:

Purchasing a car out of state and registering it there?

Hello...

I am from New Hampshire, but have an internship in New Mexico for the entire summer. I was planning on flying to NM and then purchasing a car/motorcycle there to use for the summer, as driving my current car out there would be prohibitively expensive. How can I register this new vehicle in NM?

Thank you,

Charlie

  1. You are going to be living there and will have an address there that is all you need. Buy your vehicle and have your New Mexico address put on the title. I shouldn't be any different than if you were still at NH.

  2. Same way you'd register it anywhere else. Take the title

to the DMV office and pay your fee, get your license plate.

  3. Before making a decision, check out the different laws, regulations, taxes, fees etc.  (Check N. Hampshire's smog requirements too)  It may be just as cheap in the long run to drive your existing car out there assuming it will make it.  Think about it...Gas is very high priced right now, but a plane ticket is at best going to be a few hundred dollars,  then you have to temporarily rent a car, then pay the taxes and fees etc. etc. on your new car/bike, not to mention the purchase price.  Also, depending on how much "fibbing" you are comfortable with, you may be able to buy in N.M. and still register in N.H. using your current address, or that of your parents or a friend.  Go to both states' web site and find out.

Sounds like you'd be best off just driving what you have and let it be.
