I am a responsible person and take guns very seriously. What is the process that I would have to go through in purchasing a shotgun at a hunting store. Do I have to go through a similar process as purchasing a handgun?

  1.   Just some paperwork, no waiting period. But if your a felon there might be an issue. Not sure what they check when they walk away with your paperwork.

Your question sounds like your a young person. Keep in mind you must be 18 years of age. If your going hunting you should probably sign up for a hunter safety course at the same time.

  2. Purchasing a long-gun in Michigan is a bit different than a handgun.  You don't need to go through the process of obtaining a purchase permit, as you do with a handgun, but the gun store will run a standard background check before they process the transaction.  If your history is clear, the process is as simple as going to the store, signing on the dotted line, waiting about 15 minutes, and taking your new gun home.
